Bespoke bedroom furniture for a good night’s sleep

Bespoke bedroom furniture for a good night’s sleepBedroom furniture can be categorised into three main areas; beds, dressing tables and chests of drawers, and wardrobes.

If you are starting from scratch when considering your bespoke bedroom furniture, probably the first item to concentrate on is the bed. There may be different elements to consider depending on who the bed is for. For example, is it for a couple or for a child? Will it be just for occasional use by guests and, if so, do you only need a single bed or a double?

Having identified who is going to use the new custom made bed you should next consider the size which will, largely, be determined by the size of the room.

Make sure that you measure the room carefully before giving the size to your chosen bespoke furniture manufacturer ensuring there is sufficient room at each side for access and to make the bed. There also needs to be enough room at the end of the bed to manoeuvre so take this into account if you are considering a footboard.

The choice of material may also be influenced by who the bed is for. Many options are available including wrought iron bed frames, leather beds and, of course, various type of wooden beds. You may prefer not to have handmade metal furniture for a child’s bedroom in case they hurt themselves by falling against it. Equally, a bespoke leather bed may be too delicate and expensive for a child’s room but may be the luxury that a couple are looking for. The benefit of having a handmade wooden bed is that you can select the wood to match other pieces in the bedroom or the rest of your house.

Once you have had your bed custom made you can turn your attention to storage solutions. The benefit of handmade wardrobes is that you can have them designed to fit a certain space, either freestanding or built in. For example, if you have a loft conversion, bespoke wardrobes can maximise the use of eaves storage.

Your furniture designer can help you decide if sliding doors, bifold doors or traditional doors will be most suitable for your custom made wardrobe. If you are having a wooden bed and wardrobes made, your chosen craftsman will be able to match the detailing on each piece so that they complement each other.

Buying bespoke furniture usually means specifying a quality that is built to last. In this respect there are several things to bear in mind when commissioning your chest of drawers. Firstly, the drawers should be made using dove tail construction since this is the tried and tested method of assembling a drawer of premium quality. Additionally, fine furniture drawer fronts should be solid and not simply glued on and the runners should be wooden since these are much more durable than inexpensive metal drawer slides.

You could discuss with your bespoke furniture maker the inclusion of an internal divider to help prevent dust falling from layer to layer through the chest of drawers.
