What to consider when commissioning bespoke garden furniture

As we enjoy warmer and warmer summers the garden has become a natural extension of the house as a functional space for outdoor entertaining and alfresco dining. Commissioning bespoke garden furniture means that you will end up with exactly what you need.

First of all, consider how many people you usually entertain or whether the garden furniture is simply to provide seating for quiet reflection. Make sure you measure your patio area carefully before specifying the size of your table - there needs to be sufficient room to pull out the chairs around it.

Next consider the material you require. Wooden garden furniture provides a very natural look but will require more maintenance than, say, metal garden tables and chairs which are more durable and could also be used in a sun room if required. If you select classic teak garden furniture make sure it is made from good quality wood that it resistant to warping and rotting. Additionally, ask your bespoke furniture maker to use corrosion resistant fittings and ensure that the joints are made using the tenon and mortice technique for extra durability. The high oil content in teak will naturally help protect it although it will be subject to general weathering over time.

Your choice of material may be influenced by your ability to store the garden furniture. Metal outdoor furniture may be able to be left out during the winter but wooden garden furniture is best stored in the dry. Ask your furniture maker for his advice.

If you plan to regularly move your garden furniture around - perhaps following the shade - then something lightweight would be more convenient.
