Caring for your bespoke wooden furniture

Caring for your bespoke wooden furnitureSolid wood handmade furniture will gradually change in response to changes in humidity, temperature and sunlight but do not be concerned by this; it is simply adopting its natural characteristics and mellowing to its surroundings. However, there are a number of important issues to observe when caring for your wooden furniture:

Regularly rotating any ornaments will help prevent patches of different colour appearing where the object has been stood.

In general the only maintenance required is to dust the furniture once a week, using a soft, lint-free cloth. If your wooden furniture has a lacquered finish, regular dusting and the occasional wipe over with a clean, damp cloth followed by a dry duster will maintain its condition.

For bespoke wooden furniture with a waxed finish, use good quality natural beeswax and polish along the grain every 3 months. Buffing with a clean duster will keep your handmade furniture in good condition.

If your wooden furniture has an oiled finish it is recommended that you apply linseed oil every 3-4 months.

Do not use proprietary silicon or spray polishes as they may leave a residue on the surface of your wood table. Similarly, the use of detergents for cleaning is not recommended.

Avoid placing solid wooden furniture, especially oak products, in rooms with under floor heating. Solid wood will absorb moisture and if the atmosphere is very humid this may result in the wood expanding and draws sticking. Conversely, if the atmosphere is too dry, as in a conservatory, bespoke wooden furniture may show signs of warping or splitting. Introducing plants to a room can sometimes help to alleviate this problem.
